Homemade deodorant recipes with Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has a large number of benefits for the skin. Coconut oil also has fantastic moisturising benefits that extend beyond simply the high content of vitamin E. Virgin coconut oil is a highly effective and completely natural moisturiser.

It is unlikely to create adverse reactions as it is completely natural meaning that, unlike many moisturisers, you don’t have to worry about rashes and unsightly blemishes appearing on your skin. Further compared to most moisturising creams, which often carry an extortionate price tag, coconut oil is cheap to buy and lasts long. In terms of natural remedies coconut oil treats and alleviates many common skin conditions including eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

Here are 2 recipies using coconut oil for homemade deodorants: a Cream and a Stick.

DIY all natural Deodorant Cream

This is a recipe for a light yet effective cream deodorant for your skin.

  • 60 ml baking soda
  • 60 ml cornstarch powder
  • 8 Tablespoons Coconut oil
  • 5 drops tea tree/lavender/rosemary oil

You need a smaller glass jar with a tight lid (Mason jars are ideal, but any clean screw-top jar will do).

  1. Put a small saucepan on the stove without heating it yet.
  2. Add the dry ingredients first: Baking Soda and the Cornstarch Powder.
  3. Add one tablespoon of Coconut oil to this dry mix.
  4. Now turn the heat on to a very low flame, and ensure that you are constantly stirring.
  5. The oil will help melt the powders and bind the ingredients. As the oil begins to melt, add another tablespoon of oil and keep stirring.
  6. Repeat this process till you have used all your Coconut oil. Keep stirring till you dissolve all the powdery ingredients in the mix. You should get a smooth creamy texture, that may seem slightly runny, but will become more firm as it cools.
  7. Just before you turn your heat off, add the drops of your preferred essential oil and give it a final quick stir.

Take your mixture off the heat and fill up your glass jar. Leave it outside to cool and then cover and store for future use. You can apply this cream directly to your underarms, whenever desired.

All natural DIY Deodorant Stick with Coconut oil

This a DIY all natural deodorant stick recipe. It is your perfect base that uses the same ingredients as the cream, however, it doesn’t require heating.

  • 60 ml baking soda
  • 60 ml cornstarch powder
  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut oil
  • 10 drops tea tree/lavender/rosemary oil

You can use an old or new roll-on stick container, emptied and cleaned. Making the deodorant is pretty similar to the deodorant cream mentioned above, but it does not require heating. It is the difference in proportions of ingredients that gives you a different constancy for your end product.

  1. Add the dry ingredients: Baking Soda and the Cornstarch Powder.
  2. Add the Coconut Oil and your blend of essential oil.
  3. Mix all your ingredients until you have a smooth consistent that does not contain any granules or dry elements.
  4. Initially this mixture may not seem as firm as you need it to be for a deodorant stick, but don’t worry, it will settle down once you store it in a cool place.
  5. Double check that your deodorant stick containers are clean and dry. Make sure that the base of the container is screwed down. Fill up your containers and store them away for 2 to 3 days to allow the mixture to set completely.

You can apply this cream directly to your underarms, whenever desired.
